Arlington County requires each of its dog parks to have a sponsoring group that assists in the day-to-day running of these parks. Notably in addition, Shirlington Dogs II coordinates with the County on issues involving the park, provides the poop bags, organizes clean-up events, and identifies corporate and other sponsors to support and assist in this endeavor.

Shirlington Dog Park was established over thirty years ago and was one of the first officially recognized off-leash dog exercise areas in the region. Being approximately two acres in size, its narrow, quarter-mile length with an accessible trail, runs along an urban stream on the one side and warehouse buildings on the other. There is also a separate adjoining area for small dogs. It is open every day of the year during daylight hours and receives nearly 200,000 visits annually.  In a Washington Post article on the Shirlington neighborhood the dog park is mentioned prominently and stresses its importance to the area. Shirlington Dog Park consistently is named one of the best dog parks in the region, including in the October 2023 issue of Northern Virginia Magazine. Shirlington Dog Park was also picked as the top dog park in the country by the company Link AKC.
