April 2024 Newsletter

1.  The stream and its banks are NOT part of the dog park and, as posted, can be dangerous to you and your dogs. The stream at any time can carry a variety of toxic pollutants as well as harmful debris even when the water looks clean. In addition, the banks on both sides of the stream are very slippery and unstable.

2.  The South Nelson Street pedestrian bridge near the dog park that leads to Shirlington Village is currently closed for repairs through the end of April. Alternative routes to cross over the stream are South Walter Reed Drive, accessible from the north end of the dog park, or Shirlington Road on the other side of Jennie Dean Park.

3.  The spring Shirlington Dog Park clean-up weekend will be May 18 & 19. Mark your calendars. Support the dog park by planning on participating. We will be spreading mulch around the trees, picking up trash and doing other tasks to benefit the park. More details will be in next month’s newsletter.

4.  It is vital that everyone pick up after their dogs. Make sure you keep your dogs in sight from the moment you enter the dog park. A majority of the poops not picked up are near the entrance.

5.  All dogs entering the dog park are required to have their current rabies vaccine tag displayed along with their license tag. The Animal Welfare League of Arlington is offering low-cost rabies vaccines and microchips on April 11. You must register in advance. For info: www.awla.org/event/low-cost-vaccine-microchip-clinic-12/
